The Great Mississippi River Race for Rett Syndrome, May 2001 is the longest canoe/kayak marathon race in history. Five dauntless, courageous teams used only human muscle powered propulsion of 2 person boats to travel 2,348 miles down the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca, Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Physical and mental endurance were taken to the extreme while attempting to paddle nonstop to the Gulf of Mexico in world record time during this charity event. Rett Syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that randomly strikes 1 in 10,000 to 15,000 young girls (over 99% are female) within the first two years of life. Rett Syndrome can affect any child in any family. After an apparently normal 6-18 months of development, a typical Rett syndrome child begins to suffer the loss of any speech and the ability to walk normally. Flagship Double Helix - Clark Eid, Event Chairman, built the unusual cedar strip flagship Double Helix, for Team Double Helix, for this race in honor of his daughter Amanda. Amanda has Rett Syndrome.

Clark designed the two rose vines that can be seen wrapping completely around the Double Helix craft. The rose vine was designed to mirror a segment of double-stranded DNA that codes for a peptide that spells: A-M-A-N-D-A-S-D-R-E-A-M-K-E-E-P-E-R. The Double Helix is in the process of being publicly placed at the world-class Morial Convention Center in New Orleans so that we can continue to raise awareness of Rett Syndrome to the general public.
